July 5, 2023

OKRs, which stands for Objectives and Key Results, is our to-go goal-setting framework. Combined with the power and versatility of Notion, an all-in-one productivity tool, we created a powerful OKRs Notion template that provides a seamless solution for any individual or team to track goals and measure progress.

In this article, we will closely introduce our OKRs Notion template, explore its benefits, and how it can help you achieve your goals more effectively.

Introduction to OKRs

Before we dive into the OKRs Notion template, let's briefly overview what OKRs are.

OKRs are a goal-setting methodology popularized by companies like Google and Intel. It is a simple yet powerful framework that helps individuals and teams define their objectives and track their progress.

The main components of OKRs are Objectives, the goals you want to achieve, and Key Results, which are the measurable outcomes that indicate progress toward the objectives.

The Power of Notion

Notion is an innovative productivity tool that combines note-taking, project management, and database functionalities into a single platform. It offers a customizable workspace to streamline workflows and boost productivity.

With Notion’s customizable interface, individuals and teams can organize and collaborate on various projects. We call it "Our External Brain," 🧠 as we use it for notes, capturing ideas, managing tasks, setting goals, maintaining databases, and much more.

Our main goal when developing this template was to create a transparent and central system where you can easily track your progress.

How to set up OKRs in Notion?

The first step that you need to do is to define your objectives and key results and decide on the period. For example, we always set our OKRs for every quarter of the year.

Quarterly Objectives provide focused alignment, measurable goals, and increased accountability. The quarterly cadence allows flexibility and adjustments as priorities evolve, ensuring relevance and attainability. So if possible, we advise breaking it down into quarters.

We usually set 3-5 Objectives, where the majority are professional ones and one for personal life and health-related Objective.

Here is one example of how growth OKR could look so that you can visualize it better:

Objective: Improve time management skills to be more productive

  • KR1: Identify and prioritize the top three tasks each day in the morning planning
  • KR2: Use a time-tracking tool to measure daily productivity
  • KR3: Limit time spent on non-essential phone apps to 1h per day
  • KR4: Establish a strong morning routine and stick to it from Monday to Friday

Once you have your motivating and measurable OKRs ready. You can enter them into your template and start working on them.

Tracking Progress with Notion

Once you set your Objectives and Key Results up, it's time to start working on your goals and becoming a better version of yourself. Plan your day according to your OKRs and make small steps daily to achieve your set Key results. These steps, we call them initiatives, bring you closer to the goal you set for the quarter or any other period.

We recommend updating your progress weekly to keep track and stay motivated. The progress update should take less than 15 minutes when using our template.

Customizing our OKRs Notion Template

Every individual or team has unique requirements and preferences. Notion's customizability allows you to tailor our OKRs template to your needs.

You can add additional fields, modify layouts, and incorporate your branding elements. This flexibility ensures that the template adapts to your workflow seamlessly.

If you change the tracker or build your tracking system, you can visualize your achievements through charts, tables, and progress bars, gaining valuable insights into your journey toward success. We use progress bars for that.

Best Practices for using the template

To maximize the benefits of the OKRs Notion template, here are some best practices to consider:

  • Set clear and inspiring objectives that align with your long-term vision.
  • Choose key results that are measurable, relevant, and challenging yet attainable.
  • Regularly update and review your progress to stay on track (best would be weekly)
  • Have open communication and collaboration among team members if used in the organization.
  • Leverage other Notion integrations and automation features to streamline your workflows.

💡 Tips for Successful Goal Achievement

While the OKRs Notion template provides a powerful framework, adopting specific strategies for success is important. The template alone will not bring you victories; you need to change your perspective and be ready to make some fundamental steps forward in how you approach goal setting.

Here are a couple of ideas that are a great starting point:

  1. Break your objectives into smaller, actionable, measurable tasks (key results).
  2. Prioritize your tasks based on their importance.
  3. Celebrate milestones and accomplishments along the way.
  4. Seek feedback and learn from both successes and failures.
  5. Continuously refine and adapt your goals as needed.
  6. Be honest with your progress, and don't sandbag for success.
